The Pescetarian Diet

Pescovegetarians Add Fish and Seafood to the Vegetarian Diet

Begin with the term vegetarian and add the optional prefixes lacto (dairy), ovo (egg), or pesco (fish), as applicable. Pescovegetarians are fish-eating vegetarians.

With the vegan diet (plant foods only) at one end of the spectrum and the omnivorous meat-based diet at the other end, the pescovegetarian, or pescetarian, diet falls somewhere in the middle. The pescetarian diet includes a combination of fish and seafood, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. The diet may include dairy and eggs.

The pescetarian diet may serve as a compromise between a vegetarian and meat-eating diet or as a transition toward a vegetarian or vegan diet, which may be chosen for health, environmental, or ethical reasons. Overall, the pescetarian diet is similar to the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on fish and seafood, fruits, vegetables, and grains.

Health Benefits of the Pescetarian Diet

Fish and seafood contain high-quality protein, iron, and essential Omega-3 fatty acids and low levels of saturated fats, which are associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease and related conditions.

In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) qualified the health claim that Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA reduce the risk of coronary heart disease [U.S. FDA. FDA News. FDA Announces Qualified Health Claim for Omega-3 Fatty Acids. 2004].

Plants, seeds, and nuts, such as green leafy vegetables and flaxseed oil, contain Omega-3 fats. Oily varieties of fish, such as herring, salmon, and sardines, contain the highest levels of Omega-3 fats. Choose fish and seafood with the lowest levels of mercury and other toxins.

Low-Mercury Fish and Seafood

  • Anchovies
  • Clam
  • Crab
  • Herring
  • Oyster
  • Pollock
  • Salmon (Pacific)
  • Sardine
  • Squid
  • Tilapia

For information on low-mercury fish and seafood choices for pregnant women, see Safe Fish and Seafood During Pregnancy.

Adequate dietary iron is a consideration for vegetarians of all types. Fish and seafood sources of dietary iron include crab, oysters, mussels, sardines, oysters, and scallops. Other pescetarian diet sources of iron include dried fruits such as apricots, peaches, and figs, vegetables such as spinach and parsley, chickpeas, and nuts.

Environmental and Ethical Considerations

Consumers can make sustainable fish and seafood choices with the help of the Blue Ocean Institute's Guide to Ocean-Friendly Seafood and Sushi Guide. Fish and seafood are ranked according to five categories: life history, abundance, habitat, management, and bycatch. The guides also flag fish with high levels of mercury and other toxins.

Sustainable Fish and Seafood

  • Alaska Salmon
  • Albacore and Yellowfin Tuna
  • Tilapia
  • Northern and Pink Shrimp
  • Mahi mahi
  • Bay Scallop

Pescetarians add fish and seafood to the vegetarian diet. A balanced pescetarian diet provides high-quality protein and multiple sources of essential Omega-3 fatty acids. The pescetarian diet can serve as a healthy alternative to a meat-based diet or as a transitionary diet towards a stricter vegetarian or vegan diet.

I just started my pescetarian lifestyle for a month now..and i noticed a lot of changes in me both physically and mentally. First, you are what you eat and as i believe in this saying led me to shift to pescovegetarian. I used to eat anything and everything and it made me fat, always uneasy and low esteemed person for reasons unknown to me. When I learned about this diet that I can eat both plants and have a good source of protein I thought it is better than a strict vegan diet..I tried for a week and I noticed changes in my figure...maybe because the food I ate are seafoods, veges and fruits that makes it healthier. I lost a total of 2 kilos for this month just being a pescetarian and I planned to make this as a lifestyle. I have never eaten any meat other than seafood and it feels better on my breathing.
I have seen the documentary "Eartling" and i've seen how cruel they are to animals like cow, chicken and pig just to meet the high demmands of meat eaters...so as a pescovegetarian I feel that I am saving the world in my little ways..

I went on a pescetarian diet for lent. At first, it was really annoying, all I wanted was a juicy red steak! However, now that lent is over and I have tried meat again, I've realized that it was better when I was on the limited diet. I found myself looking closer at the contents of items and ended up consuming much less fat and actually lost 10 lbs unintentionally.

I still plan on eating meat in the future; however, I'm going to keep avoiding meat unless it's a special occassion.

PS. Vegans are stupid.

I just recently decided to alter my eating habits by becoming a pescetatian. I feel it was the best decision I could have made health wise. My father is very unhealthy. He is on dyalisis, has diabetes, he has issues with his heart and high blood pressure. I am very concerned for him. My mother is morbidly obese as well as my father and me and my sisters are overweight. I made this decision not only to better me, but to to hopefully influence my family to do better. We only have one life and when you cant do all the things you want to because your health and weight stand in the way, it is not a good feeling. I am only 20 years old and I want to live a long healthy life. I have already experienced great results from this new lifestyle and I am so excited. I think it was the best decision I could have made.

I'm glad to hear when people feel good on their chosen diets. I think that pescetarian is a good compromise between eating meat and vegetarian for people who wish to avoid too much protein or eating animal foods in general.

I'm a moderator for a Pescetarian forum. As far as I know, it is the only one on the internet.

I am starting my Pescatarian lifestyle. I don't crave meat. I really don't. I actually despise eating meat. My mom said until I can find an alternative to meat, she's making me eat chicken. But I LOVE fish. so i am going to try this life style. Also another motive for this is that I am boycotting slaughter houses and such, because i don't agree with animal cruelty and I am a proud member of PETA. but as wierd as it sounds, i find it okay to eat fish and seafood. lol so LETS GO FISH. lol

Maybe it's a mammal thing. I don't like to eat mammals for ethical reasons, but I feel okay hunting birds and fish.

It is easy and fun way to see what else you can do everyday.

I have been on this diet for a couple of months now. I am 17 and had been having a number of health problems. I had acid reflux, stomach ulcers, and other stomach related problems that the doctors couldn't;t find out what it was. I would have such bad stomach pain that I would throw up, and couldn't even get out of bed. I switched to this diet because it seemed like I could cut back on my meat, yet still be healthy. Since I have started this diet I have had only a few stomach episodes, and they were after I had eaten red meat. I think this is an awesome diet, and that the vegans who judge because we still eat seafood need to really to take a step back and see that hey we are still helping the environment. This diet also saved my little sisters life. She was diagnosed at the age of 9 with a blood disorder related to leukemia called I.T.P. . She went through a lot of troubles and we almost lost her. Then a friend suggested this diet. After consulting her doctor, we immediately started her on it. Within a week she had improved and was finally allowed to leave the hospital. We had tried every known medical treatment possible and nothing was working for her. I Highly recommend this diet to everyone. And parents, whether your children are having health problems or not, this could help prevent future ones. This is a very healthy lifestyle choice!

Since the beginning of 2011 I do not eat any dairy or red meat (ie any mammal of any kind) but eat seafood, organic free range eggs and chicken (no other poultry). Does anyone know what I would be a peskovopoultvegetarian?? I can't seem to budge the chicken and never the eggs. I will search the earth for free range organic non cruel eggs and chickens. Low sodium salt. I really miss my cheese though. Any suggestions I can buy in Eastern Sydney. I don't think vegans are stupid. Everyone has there own way to live just as long as they treat themselves and others with a kind heart.
